KANTANA MEDIA CENTER

The Kantana Media Center was  a place where students from Kantana Institute were allow to show their work  and using it's facilities such as workshop area and cgi room. The media center also allowed people from outside or local area people to have an interaction with. The purpose is to let other people know what Kantana is doing and inspire people from local area. It was placed beside the Kantana Institute, with the same position of  the walkway.  The exterior was built by concrete, while inside there will be undulating brick blocks, creating contrast between the 2 materials.

EXPLODED AXONOMETRIC DRAWING & FORM DEVELOPMENT

The Kantana Institute has its "cruciform plan" with a walkway to seperate each functional spaces in a type of "horizontal" aarea. The Kantana Media Center took the idea of this cruciform plan, but developed from horizontal to "verticcal". The new building has the cruciform layout at the section and also the same circulation as the existed building does. Leading the idea of this shifted cruciform plan to be developed from horizontal layout to 3D layout.

' Fraternal Twins reinterpretations and variants '

' The NEW Le Fresnoy '

After taking the Le Fresnoy concept and characteristics to develop it as a toy ( learning tool ), from now we were asked to moving on to the bigger scale which we have to create and design the ' fraternal twins ' of our own case study by taking its DNA and also the architect style.

The design of ' The NEW Le Fresnoy ' is developed from the program and characteristic of the Le fresnoy which was the media school for new generations crossover artist, created a big amount of contemporary art which is about to combining art with the new technology for example audio-visual, every work from the students and the visitor instructor are prepared to present each year in the event called panorama event.

' SITE '

' The NEW Le Fresnoy ' were located besides the Le Fresnoy to fulfill the Le Fresnoy which I added more program to ' the NEW Le fresnoy ' for example some performance class so that the student will not just product the audio-visual or short film but also allow and have more chance to produce the  long movie or animation. I have taking the old existing warehouse besides there to renovate it as the new school building which contained the library, lecture class, cinema, editing room, studio for shooting and photography and the new long exhibition hall to present the student work. All the program were arranged follow the plan concept of the pre-production -> production -> post-production related to the continuous experiences ideal of Bernard Tschumi, an architect who design the Le Fresnoy.

Connecting the Le Fresnoy with ' the NEW Le Fresnoy ' together by extending the sructural column from both the Le Fresnoy and the existing warehouse together allover the between space and ctreated the huge giantic bridge roof, fly over the existing house and the garden underneath. This bridge were design mimic to the new roof with the suspended circulation also the concept of the in-between space at the le fresnoy art center however this bridge be both the circulation and the roof at the same time. Below the bridge provided a long path among the garden which also connected to the le fresnoy art center. The bridge also prepared the space for some performance show, sound editing themes, the 360 degree panorama screen and pavilion with the cafe and snack bar for resting and relaxing.

"Define an institute’s alternative identity  (Alt-Institute) within the vocabulary,
rules and limits defined in previous phase work. Craft an argument around
institutionality and pedagogy facilitated through architectural language."

Little Box

From the previous phase, the DNA of the case study architecture and architect are presented in free learning center such as building with nature, little spaces,
and no boundaries between exterior and interior , together creates  a sharing space for different programs in limited space that still conserving surrounding nature

In this phase  the project continue on study of the DNA of the case study from phase1.
I designed the school that have a main characteristic of Montessori  school
and combined with the DNA of the architects of my case study.

The plan of the school is created by the characteristic of the plan of the case
study which is seem like a modular but in my design I used this modular to created
main building and separated into many space within one modular instead
of the arrangement of each modular like case study.  The plan was also inspired by the toy from phase 2
by using the property of the toy that allow the player to attatch the triangles together freely and the main
building was created by using the posibilities of shape and pattern that the toy can made.

Using of local material and the centrifugal circulation was inspired from the case study.
The handrail and the furniture was designed to appropriate for the user that is in the age of 0-6 years.

Phase 3 Tony Nattawat Tangthanakitroj

Phase 3 or the final phase is about combining the structure principles, forms and strategies within the new institution building. Several inspirations has been mix to shape up the new learning centre locating close to University Bocconi the original building where I got the influence from and therefore the new building I was designing is for and to be an another part of this university programs.

*************

Phase 1
University Bocconi has many different buildings but the main one I was studying on is the Aula Magna building designed by Grafton architect. The building has unique forms where the architect designed to have canopies of smaller buildings strike upward from the main big hall which is the auditorium. The bottom of the smaller buildings where the glass facade is locating allows light to enter inside and spread all around the interior of the auditorium.

Phase 2
From the phase 1 I was influenced to take some inspirations to create a new toy. A two game players toy having to stack up plastic piece that has magnet stick at the end of the long side.
The objective of the toy is to stack up pieces as many as possible. each players have to stack there pieces and all of their pieces have to be connected together. The players may use their opponents structure to support their pieces. The first person who makes the whole fall down looses.

Final Phase
I choose to place my design close to the original location to be another part of the programs. The building was the combination of the principle from the first and the second phase.

From the first phase I apply the glass facade at the bottom of the canopy to allow light to enter the ground level canteen.

Because the building is connecting to the city road and the main university area. It shapes the model to have two main entrances to the building. The one facing to the city road will bring people toward the upper social spaces and office and the one close to the university area will lead to the ground level canteen and grocery store.

From the 2nd phase the principle of branches connecting at the is included in this project as well. At the top of the building canopies are connected together to allow people to circulate from one building to another.

"Fraternal twins"

This project focuses on the visual experience based on the site. The intention of this project is to provide the users the visual experience from varying contexts around the area, this included: The neiborhood, the forest, the sky, the residential hall, the dining hall and lastly the study case itself which is the Arcus center for Social Justice Leadership.

The reason for this is because looking back to the study case, it focuses on providing a tri-axal shape that is based on the 3 contexts (Neighborhood, forest and the campus) with windows to provide a view towards those contexts to symbolise "Unity" as it was made to raise an awareness of equality and everyone becoming as one.

This was then transferred into a gift that projects different kinds of shapes based on the filter used, the shapes projected will intersect each other on canvas when we move the projector around, suggesting the sense of unity coming out from shapes that were are different.

Making the "visual experince" the main focus for this project as a whole.

"Play gifts & manipulatives"

The "Arcus sighter" is Inspired by the way the arcus building has a curved facade with the concept of “looking out” of the tri-axal shape making all of the three factors united as one (campus, neighbourhood and forests). Using the perspectvie point of view and shadows to indicate variation.
