Praew Proudwarin Phannachet Project1.3: Fraternal twins

Project 1.3

Fraternal twins
Emerson College LA for biological studies
Thom Mayne

In this phase (Phase3) I had studied about the biological twin building which means
to research or find the identity of the building and bring develop into our design but still
keep the identities design from the architecture  of the original building.

As I developed from my toy (the stacking of pieces of the facade),
I bring the feature of the facade and put it into the extended building to show its DNA of Thom mayne's architecture design as a connection. Emerson College LA is like a drama academy. Moreover, programs in a new building are libraries, an exhibition hall, a cafe, workshop,
co-working spaces and a courtyard. Every spaces have designed for specific activities
which provide for the students to study more efficiently and develop other skills.
Providing spaces and equipment for students to make props, costumes and even backdrops
are necessary for a drama school because students could learn in other areas apart part from
acting. Therefore creating an atmosphere to make a more productive and creative are the main
concept of the new building.

The location of a new building is placed next to the original building to
provide more spaces for activities that could happen in the original building.
This means the students do not need to travel to another studio that is not
around this area and shorten their traveling time.

The facade is shown as a connection between the original building and a new building
obviously. The function of the facade is to help with the public area and private area.
Each pieces of the facade can be tilted in different angles to create a closed or opened area
of the building. For example, the facade over the library zone will be tilted more than
the exhibition zone to create privacy. The facade also helps to control the lightenter
the building or even shaded on the building surface, this keeps the temperature inside the
building cooler.

PLATES ANALYSIS

In this phase, the continuity of Sumet Jumsai Bangkok school for the blind building and manipulate toy start to show in this original building.
The main layer or surfaces distract from first phase divided into first prefabrication, floor texture, and details for the blind users.
However, in this phase, focusing on the blind, help create an original building replacing a building next to Sumet Jumsai building with contain the same programs.

This plate analyse a programs of the new building that remain the same as the old building. The plate show the relationship between Sumet Jumsai building to the New design building. Focusing on the blind, the focusing layer is circulation. Design circulation to create a path that have a pattern inspire from floor pattern in Sumet Jumsai building. A circulation were design in order to make blind create their mental map to get use to the building, compare side by side to the texture (facade) on the building that change due to the privacy of the use inside. A columns grid also indicate on the plate to show the relationship.

This plate show the relationship between floor pattern that inspire by second floor layer of Bangkok school for the blind. Each color indicate one meaning, for example, red for main path, green for sub-path, and orange are the path that leads to the classroom.

This show a conceptual diagram between circulation and texture on the wall. Each path are scenario that indicate one type of user inside the building. Moreover, the lower diagram show a divide of masses that divide by space between, which are circulation in between masses.

This plate shows a design proposal of the new building. The perspective want to show an atmospheric representation of how blind interact and use the building. An indication of contrast of the texture show a different type of facade on the building. Moreover, a front elevation and section purpose are to show a layer that divide by horizontal (circulation) and vertical (facade texture).

Hienz-Galinski Schule (Jewish School Berlin)
Zvi Hecker

Jewish Center for Holocaust Memorial

The Jewish center is located adjacent to the existing Holocaust memorial in Berlin. The DNA I extracted from Zvi Hecker's Jewish School is form and intersection. He is well known for the strength in the forms of his buildings which is what I applied to the Jewish center.
First extending the grids of the existing memorial overlaying the free space on the site and experiment on how the forms can be created. In the memorial includes an existing underground museum which is where i started the proposal design. Following the extended grids; I've connected the underground museum to my new building. Later on, following the methodology of Zvi Hecker, I intersect the extended grids with the site grids (roads and buildings in the site area) which then became petal shaped structures to emphasize the transaction of the structure and form of the Jewish school.
I put emphasis on the synagouge, which is on the second floor of the building. This room will be facing the memorial which gives it a powerful view. Also includes elevated seats to provide viewing sight for the people attending.
