Phase 3: Fraternal Twins Reinterpretations & Variants: GING KRITNARA KROONGJIT

Phase 3: Fraternal Twins Reinterpretations & Variants

KRITNARA KROONGJIT
'SHADOW CAST BUILDING'
Peter Fisher

Continuing from the prior phases of the case study, Phillips Exeter Academy Library by Louis Kahn, and the learning tool design, the design of this 'Shadow Cast Building' is developed from the DNA of the case study itself as well as its architect.

The main characteristics of this building is considered to be its uncontainment comparing to Exeter Library as a container of knowledge that seems enclosed and solid. Another main DNA  applied to this design is the elements that conveys the sens of monumentality through the use of pure form

The program of this building is developed in the opposite direction of the Exeter Library, where the library is the place that occupants tend to learn individually  through books and resources, this Shadow Cast Building is the learning centre with main focus on interaction between others instead of self-study. The programs in this building are exhibition spaces, group working spaces, conferences and meeting room, laboratory, workshop space, cafe, and relaxing area.

The location is next to the existing Exeter Library to give the feeling of the old building being pulled apart as fragments. The form design started from a quarter of the Exeter Library's plan. From the analysis of the Exeter Library's shadow, this new building is just right at the edge of the shadow giving the continuity between these 2 building.

Looking from the view from the ground level in front of the sculpture towards the main building at the back will give the clarity of the 'shadow cast' perspective of the circle. The circle seems to be 'casting' its own shadow down to the grown in the form of the sculpture.

The material use is the DNA that took from Exeter Library, with the use of concrete and brick for the main construction and additional glass and steel to give the sense of transparency and revealing the movement inside.
The glass acts as the scene once it's dark and the building becomes the 'theater' just like the toy, 'contrast theater'

The circulation is being transform from the sculptural design towards the more industrial and functional look at the top because of the growing level of privacy and program that deal with function more is placed at the top

CONTRAST THEATER

This toy is interactive toy that results in the perspective image according to the composition created by the player.
The continuity from Phase one with educational philosophy shows through the use of light as the tool in learning, together with other ideas within the Exeter Library those are contrast between light and shadow, layering, perspective, and incomplete void.

SYMMETRY

PURE FORMS, INCOMPLETE VOID, LAYERING FROM LIGHT SOURCE

REPITATION, PERSPECTIVE

The core set of the toy

Unit blocks as a "singular drawer" to put in the blocks
15 pieces are provided

5 different types of blocks with incomplete void
15 of each type are provided

MANUAL

DIDACTIC DNA : DESIGN III PHASE I : GING KRITNARA KROONGJIT

EXETER LIBRARY
The Phillips Exeter Academy
LOUIS KAHN
1972

MSP MATRIX LAYOUT
This layout of 9 plates without any boarders interrupting the edge of each individual plate shows the continuity between the case study and it's DNA that runs along the whole analytic plates with DNA lines in each category in the architecture as 'whole', 'part', and 'detail'

MAIN STUDY CASE : EXETER LIBRARY
Exeter Library designed by Louis Kahn in 1972 is the library that represent the metaphorical idea of 'monumentality' in knowledge. The image of architecture that the academy wanted and was the brief that given to him was "a brick exterior to match the Georgian buildings of the school and an interior with the ideal environment for study"

WHOLE : This plate shows the exterior of the library with the main DNA of "monumentality" through
                 - Symmetry in the design : can be seen through the squared floor plans and the repetition in the facade with its 4 identical faces
                 - Contrast in scale between occupants and the structure : this emphasises the feeling of greatness and the experience of monumentality

PART : This plate shows the main 3 'parts' or organisation within the overall system of the library those are
             - Lighting : Shows the use of natural light that connects the readers to the outside environment
             - Zoning : Shows the main concept of "building-within-building" or "doughnut structure" with the brick construction in the outer ring for the readers and the concrete construction in the inner ring for the books
             - Circulation : Shows both vertical and horizontal circulation

DETAIL : This plate shows the details those are DNA of this case study with pure forms, lighting, perspective, free-standing screens, materials, and scale

LOUIS KAHN'S DNA

WHOLE : National Assembly Building of Bangladesh, Salk Institute
                 - Symmetry and Scale

PART  : The sections of each building shows the link in the main void in the centre of the structure

DETAIL : DNA from Exeter Library continue through in lighting, pure forms, free-standing screen, and scale

OTHER ARCHITECTURES' DNA

WHOLE : Roman Colosseum, Palace of Assembly, Brion Cemetery

PART : The main void in the centre of the structure

DETAIL : Pure forms, Perspective, Free-standing screen, Scale
