PROJECT 1.3
FRATERNAL TWINS
" ROY AND DIANA VAGELOS EDUCATIONAL CENTER"
DILLER SCOFIDIO + RENFRO
IN PHASE 1.3 WE WERE ASSIGNED TO DESIGN A TWIN OF OUR OWN CASE STUDY BUILDING, OR IN OTHER WORDS EXTRACT SOME OF THE MAIN CONCEPT OF YOUR CASE STUDY AND APPLY IT TO YOUR OWN BUILDING USING THOSE IDEAS. MY CASE STUDY IS ROY AND DIANA VAGELOS EDUCATIONAL CENTER DESIGNED BY DILLER SCOFIDIO + RENFRO WHICH IS A NEW BUILDING LOCATED IN THE COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY MEDICAL CENTER IT FEATURES A 14TH STOREY STUDY CASCADE WHICH IS THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE BUILDING.
OKAY SO TALKING ABOUT WHAT IDEAS AND CONCEPT I CHOOSE TO EXTRACT FROM MY CASE STUDY. FIRST, THE IDEA OF PUBLIC CONTINUOUS SPACE THAT CONNECTS FROM THE BOTTOM FLOOR TO THE TOP FLOOR BY ONLY THE USE OF A STAIR. SECOND, THE SPATIAL RELATION FROM LEFT TO RIGHT PUBLIC PART > CORE / FAST ELEVATION > PRIVATE PART. AND LAST, THE IDEA OF HOW EACH SPACE IN THE CASE STUDY HAS ITS UNIQUE FEATURE FOR EXAMPLE ONE I'M FOCUSING IS A MULTIFUNCTION STAIR.
IN MY PROJECT I DESIGNED A VERTICAL GARDEN THAT ARE PLACED OUTDOOR. COMBINING THE 3 CHARACTERISTICS STATED ABOVE AND ADJUSTING THE LEVEL OF ZYGOSITY INTO LOW ZYGOSITY TO MAKE THE TWIN. I STARTED OFF WITH EXPLORING THE DIFFERENT IDEAS OF DOING THE MASSING MODELS TO SEE HOW MY PROJECT SHOULD LOOK LIKE. AT FIRST I FOCUS ON ONLY THE CIRCULATION HOWEVER THAT IS ONLY PART OF MY CASE STUDY AND THEN I GO BACK TO LEARN ABOUT THE PLAN OF MY THE CASE STUDY TO KNOW ABOUT THE PRIVATE BACK PART OF THE BUILDING AND FINALIZED THE FORM OF MY MASSING MODELS AS SHOWN BELOW.
THE SECOND PERSPECTIVE SHOWS ONE OF THE UNIQUE FEATURES IN A STUDYING SPACE THAT I EXTRACT FROM THE CASE STUDY WHICH IS A MULTIFUNCTION USE OF A STAIR I WHICH I REPRESENT THE SAME IDEA IN MY PROJECT SURROUNDED WITH A GARDEN ATMOSPHERE.
THE LAST PERSPECTIVE IS ALSO REPRESENTING ONE OF THE FEATURES OF THE CASE STUDY I EXTRACT IT IS CALLED "THE STUDENT COMMON" WHICH IN THIS STUDYING SPACE THE DIFFERENT MATERIALS ON THE FLOOR INDICATES A CERTAIN STUDYING SPACE. SO, AS YOU CAN SEE IN THE PICTURE I INDICATE THE LOUNGE CAFE SITTING AS A COBBLESTONE MATERIAL ON THE FLOOR AND THE BENCH AS THE GRASS.

THE MASSING MODEL I USE TO FINALIZE MY FINAL FORM IS THE BOTTOM RIGHT ONE WHICH AS YOU CAN SEE I EXTRACT ALL THREE CHARACTERISTICS BUT I ADJUST IT IN ORDER TO HAVE PUBLIC SPACE FACE ONLY THE FRONT I ADJUST THE PUBLIC SPACE TO BE LAYED ALL AROUND THE BUILDING AND SOME PART STICK INTO THE PRIVATE PART SO THAT THE CORE AND PRIVATE PART ISN'T A SYMMETRY BOX IN EACH FLOOR BUT THE SHAPE IS QUITE DISTORTED.
MY BUILDING IS LOCATED IN A SMALL PARK OR GARDEN BESIDES MY CASE STUDY BOTH BUILDINGS ARE EXACTLY ON THE SAME ALIGNMENT HOWEVER THE PURPOSE OF WHAT THE BUILDINGS ARE AND WHAT THE BUILDINGS DO ARE QUITE DIFFERENT.
THE BUILDING IS A FIVE STOREY VERTICAL GARDEN WITH ITS PUBLIC SPACE WRAPPING ALL AROUND THE BUILDING CREATING DYNAMIC FORM IN THE CORE AND PRIVATE PART.
BOTH THE PLAN AND THE SECTION SHOWS THE SPATIAL RELATION BETWEEN THE PUBLIC GARDEN > CORE/FACE ELEVATION > PRIVATE PART
LAST ABOUT THE PERSPECTIVE ATMOSPHERIC VIEW. WHAT IS SHOW AND REPRESENTED HERE IS THE MATERIAL AND OF HOW I DESIGN THE PUBLIC SPACONCRETCE AS ORANGE CONCRETE (SAME AS CASE STUDY) TO BE OUTDOOR, THE CORE / FACE ELEVATION AS A CLEAR GLASS FACADE AND THE CONCRETE INDICATING THE PRIVATE PART AS SHOWN IN THE FIRST PERSPECTIVE.
