KANCHAPORN KIEATKHAJORNRIT : FRATERNAL TWINS

(link to full resolution)

"co"(forming nouns) joint; mutual; common and "oasis": a fertile spot in a desert where water is found, put together to become name of this last project meaning which is the co-working space or the common working space  as well as a huge water source in the area of Ahmedabad, India.

From the case study analysis of CEPT architecture building by BV. Doshi in phase one and the open-ended toy inspired by the systems and concepts of the building in the second phase of the project. Combined together to become this new twin space that solves the area problem as well as creating the community which an architect main notion since the original building.

Staring this phase from the massing, categorize into three different levels from high zygosity to lower one. Each of the massing contains a different program, however, each of the programs is related to the original building which is the school or architecture. All massings are dealing with the environment, surrounding and setting and trying to solve the problem by using the water as the main element. Water has been added to the project since the second phase 'the toy' to complete four elements of nature, earth, fire, water, and wind, that will activate student creativity and make space become more peaceful.

The first massing is the lowest zygosity, using the space location, program, and same structure as the original building water rails are added as well as the water tank to create the movement of water inside and cool down the hot temperature throughout the day.

The second massing is medium zygosity which now changes the program into the dormitory space for students, as this area is a university area only faculty building and university facilities are presented, to go back to the living area have to travel a lot so then I decided to make the dormitory inside the university space which will locate next to the original building. This massing structure or the appearance of the building is duplicating the structure of CEPT architecture building but repeating units around to create the individual space for each one, however, there is also a huge public space for people to gathering together or doing activity in the middle of the space.

And the last massing which is furthest looking and most different program from CEPT architecture building is the relaxing space that will locate in front of the school. From the rectangular shape then changes to the triangular one but still using the loadbearing wall structure. The program of this architectural design emphasizes the importance of nature as well as using water as the main component. Five pavilions facing the same direction in a different level of stairs covered by water and surrounded by trees which can be used for relaxing space, working space or even exhibition space.

After designing the massings and searching site information, I chose to continue working with the last massing design which is the relaxing space with the reason that it will make the most change to the area and it can develop the user life not only students, teachers or members of the university but also the people in the community.

From looking back and analyze the site I noticed that this area is quite a drought as there is no proper water source or even the green space or big trees that can create the shade for people. This is my starting point of the project, to create the natural space in CEPT, so my building is the part of the landscape, as well as the landscape, is the part of the building.

The design is for two purposes with two spaces, the first one is the big water source and nature space for the whole area and the second one is a common space for student or anyone to visit or use, much like a park. The plan shows two different parts, left side is the water source and the right side is for people to stay.

All architectural structure is the same as CEPT architecture faculty which is the loadbearing wall same as the materials which are concrete brick and timber that can also be seen in the original building.

Majority of the space is taken underground as it is solving the high-temperature problem. The design is consists of nine components, starting from the bottom which is the reservoir and big step like Indian tradition well steps for store water, underneath the ground and landscape. Eight different sizes pavilion stand on top of the ground which has the opening to the underground. All pavilions are connected by the pathway which using the toy as the reference. The pathway has three different level, one is underground, on the ground and above ground, this will create different experiences for the users. Stairs are used to connected each level together.

Playing with different levels and experiences create the rhythm in the design, water has movement, water can change shape and water is uncontrollable cause the use of space in this design to be also changing all the time. However, even some spaces are flooded others can still be used, this element is playing with time so the user will have different perspective or atmosphere every time they visit.

Not only inside the space that water can cause the use of space but the water can also link to the original building when it rises to the point, creating the direct connection of spaces.
