Buncharin Eua-arporn : Phase 3 Fraternal twins

Phase 3

'Fraternal Twins'

Fraternal twins are the same but also different. It’s this concept of dissonance applied to studio multiples.

After analysed the chosen building in phase 1 and brought the concept to designed a toy in phase2.

In this phase, the objectives is to choose a site and design a institutional building to be the fraternal twins of own case study building by bringing in some fundamental genes of the building and the site.

First, the massing study models were produced with different zygosity from low to high along with the initial ideas of the building's program.

Zygosity
Refers to the degree of identicalness between twins. Another word that might be relevant is spooky. As in when identical twins really are so identical that it’s creepy. They would be having a high zygosity.

The twin  building program is the dance and music practicing space for dance and music students from the Laban dance centre and The Trinity music nearby.  Also local people can join as it is a rental spaces open for everyone.

The location of the building will be right next to the river on the opposite site of the Laban dance centre. This location was chosen to provide some connection between the two buildings as people in one building can see people in the other according to transparent material used in the area facing the river. Moreover, as the function of the building is dance and music, river provide will provide calm and relaxing feeling. Also the flow of water somehow supports the idea of movement.

From looking back several times into the previous phases, I decided to bring in a very significant DNA of the Laban dance centre which is dynamic facade as a main idea of the twin.

From the Laban dance centre the facade can be seen dynamic as the material is attached to the building, it is more or less in two dimensional .
In the twin building, the dynamic idea is developed from two dimensional into three dimensional. It is not only dynamic from the way people see the facade materials but also dynamic can be seen clearly from the building 's form.

The transparency of materials are very significant in the building. As it implies the function of the room behind. The more privacy needed, the less transparency facade. The main materials are; clear glass, polycarbonated panel and mirrored glass film. The time between day and night was also considered. At day, some part of building are hidden by the mirrored glass film and polycarbonated panels according to the function and location of each room. At night, the whole building becomes a stage shining across the river along with the Laban dance centre.

The lanscape is designed to be contrast with the Laban dance centre where its building is curve contrasts with its geometric landscape. In the twin, the building is quite rigid, acute angle so, the landscape is designed to be curve. However, the design is not only for contrast but also for the function of it as it can be a very good outdoor stage or event area as it is shaded by the layered building above.

The elevation front and back show the idea of box-like which was brought from the Laban dance centre. As the floating layers can be seen very dynamic but still remain the concept of box-like from the only two directions.

There are three floors in the buildings. The ground floor is the most public floor, the first floor is mainly performance rooms and the second floor is the practising rooms.
