Play Gifts & Manipulative
In this phase the students were required to extract the concept idea of philosophy from previous phase where the analysis of DNA of the Architects were researched and analysed. The extraction of philosophy was used to design the toy for children for education purpose corresponded to the main chosen building called "The School of Arts by WOHA."
The concept
The extraction of details from SOTA are listed in these panels below to give the clear idea where the toy was originally develop by using the philosophy of the school.
As the school try to promote in it's natural circulation design, the pathway as the route for both private and public are established in the flexibility and more importantly, naturally. This come to the design of interlock block in which can be constructed in all direction from top, bottom and sides. The interlocks are not only connects with the other blocks, but the pieces used to constructed the box are also hold together as one and allow to connect with the other at the same time. Technically, this toy is played in the grid system where they can be connected from all sides of the blocks.
The Frame act as the building itself where original building design contains the mass and void facade with the division of the grid system, this lead to the design of grid frame to hold the structure together and hold the pathways from blocks in the game play.
The Manual
The rules are directly extract from the school philosophy of design where the school need to draw the attention from the public, as the art school, it's performers need to interact and engage with the public audience to create sense of collaboration where both are exchanging in the knowledge, comments or etc. These concept lead to the design of the game rules where public as one player and school is the opponent, the school need to block the public (grabbing attention) with no force required in term of the privacy and right.
The rule of changing direction after the pathways establish with 3 blocks, from the design of the school, the pathway use by the public is not in straight line with the deployment of the facilities force public to roam across the building according to available space.
The rule of the 1 block in all direction, from the school view, they can manage to maximize the attention not force in personal in order for the public to engage.
The rule of the range of playing, this from the division of the space in the building where public and private are separated illustrate that the pathways are only allow in the certain area not to breach to the restrict zone.
The rule of unable to break opponent pathways in your turn, this force the player to play with care for the other in same way of how the school need to take care of the public for its own image and reputation.
