PHASE 2

Play Gifts & Manipulatives
CASE STUDY
-
CRANBROOK ACADEMY OF ART
by Eliel Saarinen
INSTITUTIONAL IDEA
-
FLEXIBLE
there is more than one way to do things
STUDY MODELS
My first idea was a maze with 4 entrances on each edge,
that it represent the various possibilities to get to the center.
Full Resolution
But the problem is the path that leads the ball to the center is fixed and not manipulative
So I tried to add more possibilities and more flexible.
The plate was cut into 4 pieces that can change the position and walls inside were arranged in different ways
Full Resolution
As the result, I develop my toy into 8 cubes with all open faces, 4 different types.
It means that each cube can be rotated in anyway. This creates more possibilities and represent the concept the best.
Finalized Toy
-
BALLOX!
8 cubes made from transparent acrylic. There are joints inside each cube to create flexibility
of the directions which way the ball will go, left or right
