PROJECT 1 PHASE 2
PLAY GIFTS AND MANIPULATIVES
"THE MANDALA"
In this phase, we are assigned to design an open ended toy which resembles the architecture/ function of the assigned place and it's educational ideas. talking about mandala, Mandala in sanskrit means "circle" the mandala is made from small geometric shapes comes together in radius of circle to create a balanced and harmonized circle which symbolize how things are all connected. The toy is made of 10 white chipboard piled up together to create a building block with repettitive shape and diffrent sizes.
When open the package, the pattern remind us of the grande central court travetine floor of Salk institute. The symmetry and geometry of the forms resembles architecture. The symmetry in the vision of Salk also resembles the scientific accuracy.
Whenstart playing, player can assemble the blocks in many ways. First, when combined two large and small circle together you can create a structure that has central void. Which speaks about an important part in the design of the building where Louis Kahn design Salk Institute to have as much central space in the building as possibleby pulling the circulation aside to make wide and unobstruct central space.
The architecture of Louis Kahn also derived from an overlapping and intersecting geometries. This method resulted in structure with unconditional forms.
Salk Institute also talks about balancing both in nature and in architecture. Not only symmetry that gives balance but the way the whole system works together to keep the balance of the space also reflect in a philosophical way of how small things work together to create a one large system or big picture.
The method of balance can also be combined with the method of heirachy in forms and stacking to create a more unique forms.
Talking about the one below, the structure is not only talks about stacking/heirachy, but also hoe balancing can leave void which looks alike how Louis Kahn deals with the condition in the building.
the structure can be reconfigured in unconditional ways, which might include, leaning on each other, stacking, arch, ovr even two dimensional which can also represents connectivity or that everything is connected.
