Flip & Shift cube
At the beginning of the phase, I extract some of the keywords from the building which are :
- Open space
- Void
- Frame work
- Solid Objects
- Structure
- Square Shapes
- Sunlight
- Winds
So I decided to stick with the keyword "structure" ( which are columns and beams ). For the first study models, I created a diagonal pattern within a cube that represent how columns and beams are placed 45 degrees diagonally in the building and use that pattern to define one side of the cube.
As you can see, with one side different, it can create variety of forms and patterns depending on how you stack or place them.
So the next study model, I began to study about how infinity cube work and experimented with different material and numbers of cubes.
At last for the final model, 64 small transparent resin cubes are ready to be played. The way each cube is connected together worked as if there were "invisible hinge" between each two of them which allow the cubes to flip all the way to another one face-by-face in different directions.
The concept of Flip & Shift is developed from the "Openluchtschool" in Amsterdam. According to the previous phase, I represent structure of the building ( Columns and beams ) with line hierarchy and use transparent material to represent the concept of open air.
The concept of the toy is to form 1 big cube from all the small ones. But in order to do that, there are many different ways. So I create line hierarchy to define each way the cube can be formed. In another word is one pattern for one way of flipping.
There are variety of flipping methods and you have to find a way to manipulate the cube in order to get the pattern you want to appear.
