Design 3 Project 1.1 - Nanna Thaiboonruang

Phase 1: Didactic DNA

GUND HALL

Gund Hall was designed by ‘John Andrews’ for Harvard Graduate School of Design located in Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts. The building combines four programs of architectural field together under one roof with the concept of ‘collaboration’. One big open space or studio space that consists of five floors of students, different years and programs, provides more interact between students. Also, the idea of using ‘visual connection’ for students to learn from each other from freshmen to senior.

PLATE MATRIX

case study

As a whole, the main part of the building is the open studio space and the other part is the enclosed space located at the back of the building for a more private room. The different floors of studio space shows the hierarchy of the politics of space from the senior year student at the top to freshmen at the bottom. Moreover, the building's cascading form provides a sufficient amount of natural light for the architecture students.
Focusing on the main space, the studio provide a flow circulation between each floor to support its purpose of collaboration, using the stairs and the pedestrians around the working space allow for interaction.
The roof of the building is constructed with a steel trusses, providing a strong support for the big open space instead of a column. This allows for a flow continuous circulation in each floor.

Other Building by John Andrews

Scarborough College
Similar to Gund Hall, Scarborough College is a building that combines programs together. It is the building of Faculty of Science and Art which consists of science wing and humanities wing. Though it is separate into two parts, andrews's design provide a connection between space- the center meeting place and the long pedestrians. And the similar cascading floor for natural light.

Cameron Offices
Cameron Offices is a sequences of seven individual office buildings that are connected by the pedestrians and courtyards in between each building. Instead of having a meeting space to join the buildings together, Andrews used green space as a gathering area that also provides a nice view through the glass facade. And his familiar form of building, a stacking floor for natural light.

Other buildings in similar style

Similar to Gund Hall, Abedian School of Architecture is a building which consists of spaces under one single roof and the adjacency of open and enclosed space. But comparing to Gund Hall's main space which is the studio, this building has the internal street running through the middle that connect the different parts together.
The Villa VPRO shows the flow circulation in the building in a way of using a slope for a more continuous movement between the different floors, contrasting with Gund Hall's use of stairs.

Maritime Youth House shows another way of connecting the ground with the upper floor in a singular path by tilted the floor. This is another way of connecting different levels and provide both flow circulation and visual connection.
FH Factory Complex Design is another example of the building that is structured very similar to Gund Hall, the way each floors is connected by a stair and the cascading form. This factory has the same concepts of collaboration and visual connection but not as an institution.

San Mames Stadium and ancient Greek theatre types of architecture are the architecture that I think Gund Hall building has referred to. Comparing the large scale stadium and theatre with the smaller scale of Gund Hall's stadium-like form.
