PLAY GIFTS AND MANIPULATIVES

DNA : Emerson College Los Angeles
Architect : Morphosis

Location : Los Angeles, United state
From previous phase I had observed the shape, form and surface of the
building. Therefore I take out elements from the architecture to develop
into a toy.
ELEMENTS
I chose transformation of the shape of facade from the inner side of the
building.
CONCEPT
I get the inspiration from a toy called ring tower of Hanoi. A toy which has
different shapes of elements and rearrange along the pole to create a pattern.
Although, the elements are inspired by the facade of the building which
has 17 different shapes. I’ve studied about the shapes and realized that they are
slightly change frome the first shape to the seventeenth therefore I design to
use its shape as the toy’s pieces. I prepare 8 shapes of the spacers
to put between each pieces. Each type of the spacer has diferrent angles and
heights to put in each pole, creating 2D and 3D patterns along each pole.

MANUAL

MODEL
The building model I made is shown the observations of
forms and interconnection between 2 parts of the building.

Material used : Foam and White chipboard

Moreover, for the study model I had tried to simplify the shape
of the elements into one shape and use pieces of the spacer to
separate them apart.

Material used : MDF board, Wood stick,
Chipboard, Aluminium spacer.

The final model, I bring back all 17 shapes of the elements because
I would like to study how the shapes of each are transformed
and create a shape on the surface of the facade. Also, they could create
 shadow on the ground.

Material used : White chipboard, Wood stick,
Straw, Pipe, MDF board
