PROJECT 1.2

"FRETENAL TWINS"

MAD Architects is one of the most widely acclaimed and highly honoured young architectural firms in the world. By developing futuristic, organic, technologically advanced designs that embody a contemporary interpretation of the Eastern affinity for nature, the architectural DNA and outstanding design of MAD has been favourably admired around the world which they combine nature inspiring organic form with technically-innovative programme and inventive materials used such as stainless steel, polished aluminium, canvas, etc.

“Clover house distinguished itself from other educational building by its role of a shelter”. The new house’s skin and new bulbous structure billows around the existing wooden structure like a piece of cloth covering the house’s skeleton where one of the shell’s corner swoops down and touches a catenary-arched entrance, contribute a blurry space between the new and the old. The shape of the shell come from kids’ imagination when a paper covered the house. The commencing point of The Clover House is the signature repurposed pitched roof to be a reading steps with integrated book shelves where it provides dynamic interior opening, and recalls the owners’ memories of the building as their home. The form of the house brings to mind a magical cave or a pop-up fort. Compared to the original assembly-line residence, the new three-dimensional wooden structure presents a much more nature-inspired organic free form to host the kindergarten. The facade and roof utilize common soft roofing materials, such as asphalt shingles, to provide waterproofing, while wrapping up the whole structure in a sheath of paper-like pieces canvas, where it will let children to draw and keep memories on. Besides, it confirmed that MAD has an ultrafashionable taste of using novel materials.

Diagram & Micro brief

On this phase, I use the concept of inverting inside out and swapping materials between shell&frame.

Axonometric & Site plan

I choose to locate my new site next to the old one, break down one house, and create my new school.

Plan

I bring unique elements from the old school that support learning method such as sand box and left the space between shell&frame open and involve with nature surroundings.

Section

This section shows circulation, light condition in each space, and how the shell sit on the frame.

Elevation

Light condition in each space depend on the windows,
big holes in playing spaces, various size windows on study space, and a small window on sleeping space

Atmospheric representation

Shows the sequence and light condition : sand box - indoor group activity space - class room - rock domain climbing wall - sleeping room - study stairs

PROJECT 1.2

"PLAY GIFTS AND MANIPULATIVE"

On this phase, we were assigned to made a toy or a game
that related to our building from last phase.
We can bring the ideas or the inspirations from any part of our building.

My game got inspired from Clover House kindergarten, designed by MAD Architects
which is a home-like kindergarten with a teaching mythology "learning by playing".
I bring the idea of the shell such that using a million paper-like pieces canvas
to create a shell where children can draw and keep their memories on.
The shape of a shell comes from how children imagine when paper cover a house.
Keywords for this toys are deformation and create imagination.

The toy is named "Kontei Ni Aru" from Japanese language which means
"Basic or Fundamental". I use the idea of those paper-like pieces canvas,
but in this case using acrylic to create a puzzle and I also bring the idea of
all fundamental for children in kindergarten age (which they will mostly
learn by visual) such that colors, shapes, and balances.

In 1st method, I use the idea of primary and secondary colors.
My toy made by translucent material which when two primary colors joined together
in horizontal way, the middle spaces will shown a secondary color,
so that children can stack the next piece in horizontal way.

Full Resolution
The strategy is to use primary then secondary then go back to primary
then secondary continue over and over to create strange shape and form,
whoever made the puzzle fall down first will lose.

Full Resolution
The puzzle shape come from  the tangrams which is a shape that can
develop problem solving skills, logical thinking skills, create creativity
and help learning mathematic and geometry concepts.

Full Resolution
Children can also learn about the balances because of the different sizes
of puzzle pieces. At the end, the stacked strange shape puzzles linked back
to the idea of how children imagine when the paper cover the house.

1st method

2nd method

In 2nd method, I bring the Tangrams purpose and idea to create this game.
Tangrams is a shape that can create and build any shape in geometric way.
They can play by having a small competition by copy a shape of
transformed tangram or to learn by create new shape by themselves.
The purpose is to learning by using their own imagination.

PROJECT 1.1

"DIDACTIC DNA"

On this project phase, we were assigned to research about
the institute's DNA and identities that we have selected;
which including teaching philosophy, design concept,
and the idea of how people would interact
and which activities would be happen in each spaces.
Also, decode the DNA of whole, part
and  details of our case study building.

CLOVER HOUSE
MAD architects

A home-like kindergarten which was originally operated out from
the old family home. the school aims to make children grow and learn
as comfortable as they do in their own homes with a nurturing setting.
The teaching method of this school is
"Learning through Playing"

“It was important to create a kindergarten that felt like a home,

and give the kids the best possible house to grow up in,
one that promotes their learning and creativity,” stated Ma Yanking,
founder and principal partner of MAD Architects.

BUILDING WHOLE
Shelt and Structure
This plate illustrate the ideas about the most important
piece of the building; "shelt" and "structure".
As Clover house transform an old house into a new building,
the architect left old wooden structure and cover by
new modern shelt, which its shape design comes from
kids' imagination of how paper cover a house.

Activities and Interactions
The plan of the building shows which activities happened
in each spaces and how children interact with
the teaching process in each room, classify by colour.

BUILDING DETAILS
Materials
Clover house has quite special materials. The clover made by a
paper-like pieces canvas which allows children to draw and keep
memories on it. Old structure inside constructed by wood and the
secondary spaces between old and new structure made with concrete.
