PROJECT 1.1 | DIDACTIC DNA

PROJECT 1.1

DIDACTIC DNA

Different architect design different architecture because they're different at first place by specialize, identity, gimmick or even effected by environment, everything make them and their work different on the other word they have different DNA. In case of institute, there is no different all institute have their own concept or main idea and in this project phrase which called "DIDACTIC DNA" is working on case study in each architect.

Case study work on John W. Chorley elementary school by Paul Marvin Rudolph, an Americans architect. To solve the problem around that area which quite crowded population but have no elementary level school around the area so this school was built. By the factor population is crowded by the area so the school is working on larger scale than scale that ordinary school use.

WHOLE

As a whole of the building in arrangement of the room to the output layout and shape this building divide clearly between classroom and the rest, more public area in building. Main area of the building is straight forward like linear line but more private area which is classroom is added to left and right side of the building which called "WINGS".

PART

For more specific in term of scale which exploring more in term of "part" of the building the whole wing is the one. From concept of education from institute which is "CONTINUOUS PROGRESS PLAN" which is student that have potential to study further don't have to wait the whole year but can skip to the next level class due to the problem of population density, provide the room that can be more space manage that it regular one. Long open space provide the up to 4 space in single room which create an invisible boundary that have no effect to the whole area.

DETAIL

Invisible boundary effect the space that become flexible in term of space usage and divide the continuous progress room into small part which suit to education system of the room and teacher can manage classroom up to four in the same time. Step and wall element help to divide the space of the room but both element is not completely separate the the space but only make the flexible boundary.

In term of architecture, Paul Rudolph is quite clear for his characteristic of the building, DNA as "Brutalism architecture". The DNA of his building provide the familiar idea and concept through purpose and function of each design.

Architecture of Paul Rudolph have many scale from small residential to huge skyscraper. To show DNA of his building concept of all whole, part and detail is the one way to make the relate become more clear.

His DNA show all the related concept and design through his work clearly. From Chorley elementary school to Rudolph hall in Yale University and Orange county government center the idea of center space that connect all the individual space together and become the most public space in the building. And the idea of the open single space that can be manage and answer many purpose of each space.

Perspective picture provide the visualize that show how the element relate to the whole space, how the flexible is the space, how boundary create and the way space in completely isolated but the whole space is still consider as one. Both Hiss residence and Burkhardt residence is Rudolph's work that use the idea of divide space by wall and step or pillar but not completely separate space but to make the boundary.

The DNA widespread to late architecture in modern and nowadays architecture idea. The idea of creating the boundary and divide space in huge one may sound too general but in term of time the more architect seen this way of design the more they set the way of design deeply as an inspiration or a first coming idea when they deal with sub divide space.

As a idea for the "whole" which is center space, DNA that widespread is being adapted to suit function and purpose of the space be more specific than original one for example as a Geisel Library that individual space is created by people not by structure but space management by architecture is support the way people use space or villa deys that both side of the house have each specific purpose of the room that basin of the room house must have and force people to walk across the house and make the gap between the room become center space. According to term of idea in to general architect still provide the idea that relate to the building as a minority but necessary to open space that have sub-division. And the way they divide is still the same design as Rudolph's work even if being adapted a little bit but purpose and design is always the same as early architecture.

In part of the DNA widespread they have some more of complexity through the design. As a hatched area  that overlapped is the most area that hard to define where are you in each space. The idea of space maybe inverse with the original from early that the space is already divide not by structure which mean even have the enclose wall there is still sub-division inside from three; vitrahaus, layered house or forest quintet.
