PROJECT 1.2

PLAY GIFTS AND MANIPULATIVES
Toys, games, and puzzles

Continuing from the previous phase, this phase explores the chosen institute's (Montessori school Delft) educational philosophy, setting that as a framework to develop learning devices or toys. The Montessori school Delft has a clear set of principles, encouraging students to not only value academics, but to learn and develop social skills, such as participating and collaborating. A few key ideas include- leadership, self- discipline, responsibility, and initiative.

The concept for the toy started off as a game that would incorporate basic geometric shapes and colors. Then it developed into a puzzle that would be played on an indented board. The first study model depict eight- sided prisms which would be painted in different colors. Players would then have to line up the faces of the prism to connect a row of the same color across the board.

The final model of the game consists of a mixture of 48 pieces of square-based pyramids and 35 pieces of eight-sided prisms. The 48 pieces of square-based pyramids are separated into two colors, red and yellow, while the eight- sided prisms are brown. The objective of the game is simple- players have to fill up the board with four connected pieces of the same color, whether it'll be horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. A special case allow players to place an eight-sided prism on board, when they are able to form a square, out of four of the square-based pyramids (of the same color). A single four-connected row of prisms is worth one point, while a square with the brown prism is worth three points. At the end, the player with the most points wins

The game allow players to learn to recognize patterns (visual perception) and teaches them to strategize, developing problem solving skills and learning to plan and think ahead.
